The detainee, Shahanur Alam, 40, came to Bangladesh from Malaysia on Sunday morning.

Six gold bars, each weighing a kg, were strapped inside his socks with tape, Customs Assistant Commissioner Sampriti Pramanik said.

Alam was detained from beside the airport's 'Green Channel'.

The seized gold was worth around Tk 20 million.

Legal action was being taken against him, said Pramanik.

There has been a spurt in smuggling in recent times for yet unexplained reasons.

Sunday's incident was yet another case involving passengers flying in with huge quantities of contraband gold.
