Left radical killed in Khulna ‘gunfight’

A left radical leader has been killed in an encounter with police in Khulna.

Two policemen were also injured in the shootout that took place in Shantinagar under Dumuria Upazila early on Friday, police said.

Litu Sardar, 38, was a regional leader of outlawed Purba Bangla Communist Party.

Police arrested Sardar from his house on Friday night, Dumuria police OC M Mosiur Rahman said.

On their way to police station Sardar’s comrades opened fire on police, forcing them to retaliate.

As Sardar tried to flee, police fired at him.

He was rushed to Dumuria health complex with bullet wounds where doctors declared him dead.

Constables Mosharraf Hossain and Ilias Hossain also received medical attention at the health complex, the OC said.

Sardar was implicated in 13 cases of murder, abduction and extortion, the police official added.

The body was sent to the Khulna Medical College and Hospital for post mortem.
