Jamaat leader detained

A Jamaat-e-Islami leader has been detained for his alleged involvement in the torching of a Hindu temple in Kachua Upazila, in Bagerhat.

Rafiqul Islam, 45, is the Amir (chief) of Gopalpur union in Kachua upazila and a ward member of Union Parishad-7.

Kachua Police Station OC Abu Jihad Fakhrul Khan said Islam had been detained from his home in Fultala village Friday morning.

"On January 20 some miscreants had set ablaze Shailanendranath Mandal's family temple in Jobai village in Kachua," the OC said.

District Jamaat secretary general Sheikh Abdul Wadud alleged influential people were behind implicating Rafiqul in a false case and his detention.
