They were confined to a room which was then set on fire late on Saturday night.

The victims were identified as Furiya Begum, 65, her grand children Tamim, 8, Aminur Sardar, 13, and Tonima, 5.

Begum’s daughter Sharifa Begum alleged her husband had earlier threatened her over phone that her parent’s house would be torched and the family members would be burnt alive as well.

Sharifa’s younger sister Rony Begum was also injured in the attack.

Sharifa lived in her parents’ place along with her two sons Sabbir and Bappy following a discord with her husband Azad Molla.

Molla took the boys back to his place two days ago.

Sharifa alleged her husband had locked the room they were sleeping in and set it on fire.

She managed to come out breaking the window but her mother and two nephews were consumed by the fire inside.

Her sister Rony and niece Tonima were admitted to the hospital where the latter died.

Paikkandi Union Parishad Chairman Monir Gazi said they noticed the fire around 11pm.

Police rushed to the spot that night.

Gopalganj Assistant Superintendent of Police Monirul Islam said police had launched an investigation into the incident.

Police is trying to arrest Molla, he said.
