Md A Khalek, the preacher, was handed over to the police by the angry mob.

Police arrested Khalek for contempt of court and manipulation of religious beliefs, said Baliadangi OC Md Ziaur Rahman.

Khalek was delivering a sermon at Kashiadangi Mosque around 1am Tuesday, in the presence of local Alems.

More than a thousand men and women were present.

He began his sermon saying ‘Allama Sufi Delwar Hossain Sayedee is a good man, he is not guilty of anything, he has been wrongly punished’, witnesses say.
That led to public fury and Khalek's microphone was snatched away before he could finish and people began beating him up.
The mosque inmates rescued the Maulana and locked him up in a safe place there before calling the police.
Sayedee, now a Jamaat-e-Islami leader, earned notoriety as a Pakistani collaborator during Bangladesh’s Liberation War.
He faces death after being found guilty of crimes against humanity in February last year.
