A law ministry release on Thursday said an additional sessions judge’s court in each district had been turned into a children’s court by an Apr 13 circular.

The move follows a new Children Act introduced last year, repealing a 1974 law that provided for only two juvenile courts in the country.

In districts without an additional sessions judge’s court, the sessions judge will hold additional charge of the children’s court.

Under the new law, these courts will exclusively deal with cases involving children.

Where a child is involved along with an adult, these courts will deal with the child separately from the general proceedings.

The courts will hold their proceeding in a building or room set well apart from one where adults are tried.

The setting of a children’s courtroom will also be distinctly different – it will have none of those stereotype witness boxes and podiums surrounded by red cloth, the hallmarks of other courts.
