”It won’t be possible to take the country forward without your help,” she said at a programme to honour fellows of the Bangladesh Academy of Sciences on Sunday.

The prime minister handed out medals and certificates to 22 veteran and young scientists for their achievements at a function held at the Osmani Memorial Hall.

”I’m a student of literature, but I understand the importance of science,” said Hasina.

The government wants to boost the role of science and technology in every sector, she said.

”We are now self-sufficient in food production, made possible through research,” she added.

Among the awardees were Kazi M Bodruddoza, AKM Siddique from the Bangladesh Academy of Sciences, Prof Anisul Haque of East West University for Physical Sciences, and Mubarak Ahmed Khan, Chief Scientific Officer of the Bangladesh Atomic Power Commission’s Institute of Radiation and Polymer Technology.

Besides them, 12 young scientists were given the Bangladesh Academy of Sciences’ World Academy of Science Gold Medal.
