Fakhruddin, who headed the military-backed caretaker government in 2007-08, has been living in the United States since the Dec 2008 parliament elections.

Fakhruddin came out from Muhith’s room in the Westin Washington hotel on Sunday morning just as some from the US Awami League were turning up to meet the finance minister, the AL-US’s President Siddur Rahman told bdnews24.com.

“None of us spoke to him or greeted him,” he said.

The former central bank governor has worked with Muhith as a subordinate and the two share a close relationship.

Fakhruddin meets Muhith whenever the finance minister is in the US.

He lives with his wife in Potomac, Maryland.

Fakhruddin is controversial for his role during the 1/11 regime, that was constitutionally mandated to remain in charge for only three months.

He has been summoned several times by a parliamentary sub-committee after 2009 to explain his role in the violence against university students and teachers in 2007.

The finance minister is on a three-day tour to Washington as the head of the Bangladesh delegation to the World Bank and IMF’s annual spring meeting.

He joined the Bangla new year celebrations at the Bangladesh embassy in the evening.

On Monday morning he is scheduled to leave for Mexico to join a climate conference.

Bangladesh Bank Governor Aitur Rahman, also part of the delegation, is scheduled to return home.
