Child domestic help dies

A 12-year-old domestic help working in the house of a Public Works Directorate engineer in the port city of Chittagong has died, raising suspicions of foul play.

The government employee and the members of his family have claimed the child domestic worker had committed suicide.

Mohammad Jahed, the domestic help, used to work at the house of Dilruba Chowdhury, a deputy assistant engineer of Public Works Directorate’s Chittagong Circle-1 (Division-1), in the city’s C&B Colony.

Sub-Inspector of the Kotwali Police Station Imam Hossain told reporters that they arrested Nawshad Jaman, the engineer’s husband.

Assistant Sub-Inspector of Chittagong Medical College and Hospital (CMCH) Police Outpost Pankaj Barua said that Nawshad Jaman brought the child to the hospital in critical condition at around 1:30pm on Friday. However, the doctors declared him as brought dead.

SI Imam said that the family of the engineer claimed that the boy had committed suicide by hanging himself from a window grill.

Since the death appeared unnatural, the police arrested the engineer’s husband.

“The death of the boy is mysterious. Even the doctors at the hospital have expressed doubt about his suicide,” SI Imam added.
