6 cops hurt in clash with Jamaat in Sylhet

Six police personnel were injured when activists of Jamaat-e-Islami and its student affiliate Islami Chhatra Shibir clashed with police at Sheikhghat area in Sylhet city on Sunday.

Officer-in-Charge of the Kotwali Police Station Ataur Rahman told bdnews24.com that the Jamaat-Shibir men had taken out a procession from Modonmohon area in the morning to mark 44th Independence and National Day. As the police obstructed them at Sheikhghat area, they hurled brickbats at the law enforcers.

“Police fired 32 rounds of shotgun bullets to disperse them. Six policemen were injured after being hit by brickbats hurled by the Jamaat men,” he said.

The injured are police constables Abdus Shahid, Abdul Awal, Ibrahim, Amin, Mostafa and Anukul. They were admitted to Sylhet Police Hospital.

Two Jamaat activists were detained from the spot, the police official added.
