Former Indian Chief Election Commissioner Shahabuddin Yaqub Quraishi praised the Hasina-led government for holding a free, fair and neutral Jan 5 national election.

He paid a courtesy call on the prime minister at her office on Sunday.

Hasina’s special aide Mahbubul Hoque Shakil briefed reporters, after the meeting.

Hasina informed Quraishi that the current EC had been constituted through a search committee formed by late President Md Zillur Rahman after discussions with all political parties.

She said the previous governments had installed EC of “their own choice”.

The former Indian CEC mentioned that the countries of Indian sub-continent had achieved tremendous success in the field of women empowerment.

"This is astonishing," Shakil quoted him as saying.
