6 get life for killing woman

Six men have been sentenced to life for beating a woman to death at Rajshahi’s Godagarhi Upazila four years ago.

Rajshahi’s Speedy Trial Tribunal also sentenced 10 others to various jail terms on Thursday in the murder case.

State counsel Entajul Haq Babu said Judge Shamsul Alam Khan acquitted 13 others of the charges.

According to case details, the convicts had attacked Abdus Sattar, president of Chapal village’s Waqtia mosque, in a bid to take control of the mosque’s land on July 25, 2010.
Sattar’s sister Halima Begum, 30, had come to her brother's rescue, when she was mercilessly beaten up.
She died at the Rajshahi Medical College and Hospital the following day.
Sattar filed a case over his sister’s death and for attacks on the devotees with Godagarhi police.
Of the accused, Selim Hossain, Mizan Ali, ‘Humayun’, Aynal Haq, and two bothers ‘Raihan’ and Rejaul Islam have been sentenced to life and fined Tk 5,000 each. They will have to serve another six months of rigorous imprisonment if they fail to pay the fine.
Ten others, including three brothers Majhar Ali, Azad Ali, and Tajel Ali, along with Shahidul Islam, Akkas Ali, ‘Sarowardi’, ‘Swadhin’, ‘Gazlu’, Abul Hossain and Masadul Haq have been sentenced to three years’ rigorous imprisonment and fined Tk 1,000 each.
They will have to serve another three months in prison if they default on the fine.
All the convicts hail from Chapal village.
