Korean training for cops

An eight-member team led by Inspector General of Police (IGP) Hassan Mahmood Khandker left Dhaka for Seoul on Saturday night to participate in a training programme on cyber crime investigation.

The Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA), in a press release on Sunday, said the training, to be held Mar 16-29, would offer them a chance to experience firsthand about the current trends in global cybercrime, international cybercrime security issues and response strategies including the legal framework.

To further augment their knowledge about the Korean system, they will also visit the Korean National Police Agency, Cyber Terror Response Centre, National Forensic Service, Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency, and other related organisations.

KOICA said cybercrime concerns were growing in Bangladesh with an increased use of Information and Communications Technology (ICT).

The Korean agency is currently running a project styled “Enhancing Cyber Crime Investigation Capability of Bangladesh” to develop capacities of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of police.

In addition, it is setting up a ‘Cybercrime Investigation Centre’ for training and research and an ICT training institute for police personnel.

KOICA will also establish the Digital Forensic Lab, Mobile Forensic Lab, Cyber Crime Investigation Lab, and Evidence Archive under the project.

Under the project, local technical people will be trained in Korea aimed at equipping them with the necessary skill and knowledge to work in the labs.

During his visit, the Bangladesh police chief will also meet with the Commissioner General of Korean Police.

Other members of the team are Additional Home Secretary Shawkat Mostafa, Additional IGP and Chief of CID Moklesur Rahman, DIG Bhanu Lal Das, DIG Shahabuddin Qureshi, Special Superintendent of Police Sheikh Md Rezaul Hyder, Assistant Inspector General Pralay Kumer Jourder and Additional Superintendent of Police Zarin Akhter.
