The rally organised by Hall Punaruddhar Chhatra Sangram Parishad’, a body set up to recover the halls, began at the Shahid Minar around 11am on Sunday.

Around 5,000 students attended the rally.

Dhaka University international relations department teacher Nazmul Ahsan Kalimullah expressed solidarity with the agitating students.

The students announced that a protest procession and rally would be held on Tuesday.

Shariful Islam, convener of the body, said they would call a nonstop strike from Wednesday until the authorities take steps to recover the dormitories and withdraw expulsion of its member secretary and cases filed against the students.

The students had been demonstrating for recovering their halls since February.

The University Teachers’ Association also joined the agitating students.

But they did not attend Sunday’s rally to protest harassment of one of their colleagues by a leader of the Bangladesh Chhatra League university unit.
