“Healthy citizen spirit will grow by reading literature and taking part in sport,” she said at a ceremony in Dhaka on Friday.
She received cheques as contributions to a fund for meeting part expenses of hosting the upcoming ICC World Twenty20 and Lakho Konthe Sonar Bangla.
The Lakho Konthe Sonar Bangla is an Independence Day event in which at least 300,000 people are expected to sing the national anthem in chorus, setting a world record.
Eight telecommunications and 23 power-producing companies, 24 corporate institutions, 10 state-owned banks and insurance companies and 28 private banks gave money to fund the two events at Bangabhaban.
Thanking the institutions for their financial help, the Prime Minister said, “We do not want to beg from others. We want to be self-reliant.”
“For this, government and private institutions have to work together.”
She urged people to sing the national anthem in chorus at the National Parade Ground on Mar 26, creating a new record.
The initiative will inspire future generations to be imbued with the spirit of the War of Liberation, she said. “Every citizen should know the national anthem and sing it.”
The national anthem will also be sung in all educational institutions as well as those in Dhaka City, she said.
About the Twenty20 event, she said, “T20 has added a new dimension to cricket. We specially stress on cricket.”
She urged all to take part in sport and music, saying, “Sports contribute to children’s physical and mental growth.”
