The victim, Shafiqul Islam Selim alias Haat Kata Selim, 35, was the convenor of the district unit of the Awami Tarun League, a youth organisation of the ruling party.

Kotwali police OC Golam Sarwar said Selim was killed on Friday afternoon on Hamed Ali Road near his house at Satghoria in the town.

The miscreants started hacking him with sharp weapons and slit his throat when they reached at the nearby Hamed Ali Road. Then they fled the scene, leaving Selim in a pool of blood, Sarwar said.

Duty doctors declared Selim dead after locals had rushed him to the Mymensingh Medical College and Hospital.
