Voting suspended in 6 Jessore centres

The BNP backed candidate at Chowgachha Upazila poll has been injured in a clash between his supporters and those of the ruling Awami League.

Journalists were also injured in the clash at the polling centre in Chowgachha govt primary school, where voting has been suspended.

Meanwhile, polling has been held in 5 centres at Jhhikargachha Upazila after attempts to snatch ballot boxes and clashes between supporters of the Awami League backed and the rebel candidates.

Jessore’s Assistant Superintendent of Police Reshma Sharmin said that a clash between supporters of BNP and Awami League backed candidates erupted at the Chowgachha Primary School voting centre.

Ruling party supporters beat up BNP backed candidate Jahirul Islam as he went to the polling centre after being told his polling agents were barred entry.

The police had to intervene to control the situation and voting was stopped for a while, said ASP Sharmin.

Polls have been suspended at five voting centres at Jhhikargachha Upazila.

Supporters of ruling party backed candidate tried to snatch away ballot papers and election materials in the polling stations at Kayemkola High School and Kayemakola Primary School.

Voting had to be suspended.

Presiding officer of Kayemkola High School Golam Mustafa said hundreds of people armed with sticks attacked the polling centre.

Clashes between supporters of the Awami League candidate and the rebel candidate led to suspension of polling at three other centres in Jhhikargachha Upazila.
