Two AL-backed candidates win

Awami League-backed candidates Shafiul Alam of Rajibpur Upazila, Kurigram and Shafiqul Islam of Baliadangi Upazila, Thakurgaon have been elected as chairmen.

Vote counting is going on across the country after polling in the second phase of Upazila elections ended on Thursday afternoon.

Assistant Returning Officer and Rajibpur Upazila Executive Officer (UNO) Abdul Latif Khan announced in the evening that Shafiul Alam, the general secretary of the local Awami League unit, had won with 9,535 votes.

His closest contender BNP-backed candidate Mokhlesur Rahman had bagged 7,816 votes. There are 47,913 voters in this Upazila.

Baliadangi UNO Ekramul Islam announced that Shafiqul Islam had won with 50,333 votes. Closest contender BNP-backed candidate Abu Hayat Nurunnabi got 42,876 votes.
