Bangladeshi honoured by Chile Govt

Consul for Chile in Bangladesh Asif A Chowdhury has been conferred the Order of the Bernardo O’Higgins.

The Ambassador of Chile in New Delhi, Cristian Barros handed over the prestigious award on behalf of his government on the 204th Chilean Independence Day at a ceremony in a Dhaka hotel on Wednesday, said a press release issued by the Consulate of Chile in Bangladesh.

Asif Chowdhury is the first Bangladeshi to receive this award.

Ministers, MPs, diplomats, high government, civil, military officials and civil society members were present at the ceremony.

Introduced in 1956, the award is named for the South American independence leader and Chile's Founding Father Bernardo O’Higgins Riquelme (1778-1842).
This award is an honour conferred on foreign citizens for their outstanding contribution to the field of arts, education, industry, commerce or humanitarian and social cooperation.
The Order is conferred by the President of Chile once proposed by the Minister of Foreign Affairs.
Former recipients of the order include Senator Edward M. Kennedy, Senator Richard E. Lugar, Yoko Ono, George Soros, Simon Wiesenthal, and Actor Christopher Reeve.
