Shibir is third largest armed outfit: IHS

Islami Chhatra Shibir was the third most active non-state armed group in the world in 2013, says a US-based research body.

According to the IHS Jane’s Terrorism and Insurgency Centre, Thailand’s Barisan Revolusi Nasional is atop the list followed by the Taliban.

Shibir, the student affiliate of Jamat-e-Islam, is followed by the Communist Party of India (Maoist) and the al-Qaeda in Iraq.

Somalia’s Al-Shabaab is on the sixth followed by Colombian outfit FARC and the New People’s Army of the Philippines at the seventh and eighth position.

Coming in at ninth is Syrian Jabhat al-Nusra with the Unified Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist) rounding the top ten.
The IHS Jane’s Global Terrorism & Insurgency Attack Index--an annual report for highlighting key data and global trends—was posted on its website on Feb 13.
It used open source data to build its global database of terrorist and insurgent events, archived to 1997.
