She has been re-elected to the post for the second time in succession.

“I have been elected Speaker for the second time. This victory is for all the women in Bangladesh," she said in Parliament on Wednesday.

Chaudhury, an MP from a seat reserved for women, had been elected Speaker in the 9th Parliament after Abdul Hamid vacated the post to become the President.

Shamrin is Bangladesh’s first woman speaker.

Chaudhury has been re-elected to that post with a new deputy, Fazle Rabbi Miah, as the 10th Parliament held its first maiden session.

The election of the Speaker was the first item on the session’s agenda.

Chaudhury’s nomination as Speaker was proposed by Awami League General Secretary Syed Ashraful Islam and seconded by Amir Hossain Amu.

Fazle Rabbi Miah name for the Deputy Speakers post was proposed by Tofail Ahmed and seconded by ASM Feroz.
Outgoing Deputy Speaker Shawkat Ali, who was presiding over the session, put the two proposals to vote and MPs responded to both with ‘yes’.
The session was adjourned for 20 minutes so that the new Speaker and Deputy Speaker could take oath before joining the session.
They then went up to the seventh floor, at the President’s office.
President Md Abdul Hamid administered oath to Chaudhury before swearing in Rabbi to his office.
