'None from Gopalganj was there'

BNP chief Khaleda Zia appears to have got it wrong when she referred to one of the security personnel at her home as a "Gopali" (a resident of Gopalganj district).

Khaleda Zia, furious at being prevent from leaving her home on Sunday to attend a party rally on Sunday, had picked on the lady police personnel to vent her ire, saying she would change the name of the district, which also happens to be the ancestral home of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

“Where do you hail from? Gopali? Will change the name of Gopalganj. Gopalganj will not exist any longer,” she had thundered.

According to communications minister Obaidul Quader, no police official from Gopalganj was posted at Khaleda's home that day.

"I came to know that no one from Gopalganj was there that day, when she (Khaleda) made the indecent remarks," he told mediapersons on Tuesday.

The Awami League presidium member said he hoped that the Opposition Leader would be more 'responsible' while making comments.

The Opposition Leader drew much criticism for the remark from Gopalganj residents as well by Awami League leaders.

One AB Siddique filed a complaint in the Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate court on Tuesday, accusing the BNP chief of issuing threats during an argument with police.
