4 die in Lalmonirhat clash

Jamaat-e-Islami supporters fought pitched battles with police at Patgram Upazila in Lalmonirhat on Sunday during the party's nationwide strike.

Four died in the clash, police said.

Section 144 was enforced until 11pm in the Upazila in the wake of the violence.

Three of those killed were Jamaat supporters and the fourth was an Awami League activist.

Patgram Police Station's sub-inspector Ashraful Alam said that the clash erupted around 7am at the Shoreya Bazaar area.

Police said that Jamaat-Shibir activists hurled petrol bombs at a few vehicles and then targeted the police when they tried to stop the mayhem.

SI Alam said that police fired rubber bullets and then from shotguns and lobbed teargas canisters to control the situation.

Witnesses said, Islami Chhatra Shibir activist Abdur Rahim, 24, died on the spot.

Its Patgram unit president Mominur Rahman, 25, died after being taken to the hospital.

Shibir is the student affiliate of Jamaat.

Dr Pranab Kumar Das of Patgram Hospital said: "One died before he could be brought into the hospital but there were no marks on the body and Mominur died while being treated."

Das said that another body of one Montu Mia was brought to the hospital around 1pm.

The Upazila Awami League president Anwarul Islam said Mia was an AL activist.

One Saju, died after being shifted to Rangpur Medical College Hospital.

Patgram Jamaat chief Abul Kalam Azad claimed him to be a member of the party.

Meanwhile, Jamaat activists torched houses of local Awami League leader Quader Elahi and party activist Monir Hossain. They also set fire on rail tracks.

Patgram Police Station OC Sohrab Hossain said that Jamaat supporters tried to block the Lalmonirhat-Burimari highway by felling tree logs.

OC Hossain said that additional police contingents have been deployed in the area to avert any further trouble.

Patgram Upazila Administrative Officer (UNO) Rafikul Islam said that all kinds of procession, rallies and gathering have been prohibited in the Upazila until 11 pm on Sunday .
