Molla's son Hasan Jamil told bdnews24.com on Tuesday that they received a letter from prison officials.

His family reached Dhaka Central Jail in two microbuses around 7pm, our correspondent has reported.

The Jamaat-e-Islami Assistant Secretary General, also widely known as the Butcher of Mirpur for his role during the 1971 Liberation War, is currently on death row.

Molla directed his defence counsels to file a petition for a review of the Supreme Court verdict, which raised his initial life sentence to a death sentence for rape and murder.

There was no word on whether the death row convict would be seeking the president's clemency, considered Molla's last resort.

Top government officials held a closed-door meeting at the Secretariat that included the state ministers for law and home along with Inspector General of Prisons and the Home Secretary.
