Chaired by Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury, the 9th Parliament began its 401st day's work on Monday evening, recording the highest number of working days over any other previous Parliament of the country. The 5th Parliament had seen 400 working days.

According to the Parliament Secretariat, the 1st Parliament, which lasted a little over two years from Apr 7, 1973 to Nov 6, 1975, had worked for 134 days.

The second Parliament had 206 working days between Apr 2, 1979 and Mar 24, 1982.

The third Parliament had just 75 working days during its term from July 10, 1986 to Dec 6, 1987.

The next Parliament had 168 working days from Apr 15, 1988 to Dec 6, 1990.

The fifth Parliament registered 400 working days during its term between Apr 5, 1991 and Nov 24, 1995.

The Parliament that had the shortest lifespan, from Mar 19 to 30, in the country’s history had four working days.

The 7th Parliament, from July 14, 1996 to July 13, 2001, saw 382 working days.

The 8th Parliament, which did not complete its full term, worked for 373 days.

The current 9th Parliament, constituted on Jan 25, 2009, surpassed the previous records of 400 days by commencing its 401st day's proceedings on Monday. The current Parliament's term expires on Jan 25 next year.

“It means this Parliament has been active and lively,” said Speaker Shirin.

The current Parliament has also surpassed all the previous records by passing as many as 240 laws so far.

The number of laws passed by each of the previous eight Parliaments is 154, 65, 39, 142, 173, 1, 191 and 185 respectively.
