Once the law is passed in Parliament, the retirement age of the council’s researchers will be 67 from 59.

The draft got its final approval at a Cabinet meeting presided over by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Cabinet Secretary M Musharraf Hossain Bhuiyan told reporters.

“The decision has been taken to utilise the specialised knowledge of the researchers,” he said.

Bhuiyan said the BCSIR was established through an ordinance in 1978. The institute is being given a legal structure to make it more dynamic by amending that ordinance.

Apart from converting the law into Bengali, some new provisions were also added.

The Secretary hoped that the enactment would enhance the scientists and researchers scope of work. They would be able to undertake subject-specific project and would get opportunity to hold science exhibition of their work.

Earlier in May, when the draft was given a nod on principle, the Cabinet Secretary had informed that Education, Fisheries and Livestock, Industry, Power and Energy ministries too would be attached to the BCSIR.
