‘Ansarullah’ chief, others in jail

A court in Barguna has sent to jail pending trial of extremist outfit Ansarullah Bangla Team’s chief Mufti Jasim Uddin Rahmani and 30 others arrested from a clandestine meeting in the district town.

Barguna district Superintendent of Police Shyamal Kumar Nath said the Chief Judicial Magistrate sent them to jail on Tuesday as police moved the court for a 10-day remand to grill them.

The court fixed Aug 21 for hearing the remand petition.

Police detained them while they were allegedly holding the meeting in a house at Khajurtola on the outskirts of Barguna town on Monday noon.

SP Nath said: “Mufti Jasim Uddin Rahmani is an extremist leader. Important information has been gathered from him. There are two cases against him with Dhaka’s Pallabi and Uttara police stations.”

“He is an accused in blogger Rajib (Ahmed Rajib Haider) murder case filed with the Pallabi Police Station. He is also an accused in a brawl case in the Uttara Police Station.”
The other arrestees are Abdur Rahman Matubbor, Ashrab Ali, Awal Siraj, Yusuf Ali Mridha, Alamgir Hossain, Md Jamal Hossain, Abdul Jobbar, ‘Badal’, Abdus Salam, Abu Saleh, Mohammad Hassan, Md Aslam, ‘Abdullah’, ‘Nayeem’, Al-Ameen, Abul Kalam, ‘Forkan’, Abul Hassain, Mizanur Rahman, Abu Saleh, Mohammad Abdullah, ‘Selim’, Moniruzzaman, Mainuddin, Shahidul Islam, Khalil Hawlader, Jonayet Islam, Abdul Jalil and Mohibullah.
They all hail from different villages of Barguna Sadar Upazila.
The arrestees told police that they all were followers of Jasim Uddin and were attending the meeting to listen to his lecture.
Barguna Police Station (Investigation) OC Pulok Chandra Roy told bdnews24.com that Sub-Inspector Jafar Hossain filed a case against the 31 under the Information and Technology Act.
