The committee believes introduction of flights on these routes will benefit commuters travelling between Dhaka and New York.

Bangladesh’s Civil Aviation and Tourism Ministry discussed the proposal at a Standing Committee meeting at the Parliament on Sunday.

Civil Aviation authorities said the process has been initiated to strike an agreement with Canadian Civil Aviation authorities for the purpose.

“We’ve proposed that flights be started within October,” President of the committee, Mosharraf Hossain told bdnews24.com. “The Civil Aviation authorities have said they are working on it.”

“Bangladesh and Canada’s Civil Aviation are working on an agreement,” said Parliamentary Committee member Moinuddin Khan Badal. “These flights will benefit Dhaka-New York commuters the most as Toronto is only an hour away from New York by air.”

He said the committee has been trying to recommence the Dhaka-New York-Dhaka flights for a long time, but it has not materialised ‘due to some problems’. The flights to Toronto will be helpful for passengers travelling to New York.

A Parliamentary Committee press release said it has been proposed to improve the security at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport as well as beautify it.

The committee has also advised that more efficient cabin crews be employed to improve the in-flight services.

Civil Aviation and Tourism Minister Faruk Khan, Shafiqur Rahman Chowdhury and Shefali Momtaz were also present at the meeting.
