The strike started at 6am Thursday after a meeting involving Barisal Road Transport Workers Union and Bus Owners Association on Wednesday night.

No local or long route buses left the city in the morning.

“Police stop the buses without any reason and harass the workers,” said Workers Union President Jahangir Hossain. “Sometimes they demand fat bribes. We called the strike to protest this.”
On Wednesday afternoon, a bus collided with a goods-laden truck in Dhaka-Barisal highway’s Rampati area. Police took the bus into its custody.
Bus Owners Association General Secretary Alamgir Hossain claimed police harassed the owner of the bus even though the accident was due to the carelessness of the truck driver.
Following the incident, workers suspended bus movement in Barisal’s local routes around 3:30pm.
Bus Owners Association supported the move.
It was decided that a strike would be enforced on all the routes later that night.
Bus Owners Association President, Aftab Hossain told bdnews24.com that the strike would continue until they received a positive response and police promised an end to the harassment.
