Hifazat shutdown May 12

The Hifazat-e Islam has called a nationwide dawn-to-dusk shutdown for Sunday demanding release of all detained leaders and activists, including its Secretary General Junaid Babu Nagari.

The Chittagong-based radical organisation announced the programme at a press conference at Al-Jamiatul Ahlia Darul Ulum Moinul Islam Madrasa, popularly known as "Hathazari Madrasa’, at Hathazari in Chittagong on on Tuesday afternoon.

Nagari is a teacher at the the madrasa while Hefajat chief Shah Ahmad Shafi is the Director General of the Islamic educational institution.

The organisation’s Central Literature and Cultural Affairs secretary Maulana Ashraf Ali Nizampuri added they extended their support to the general strike called by the BNP-led 18-Party Alliance for Wednesday and Thursday.

He demanded arrest of and punishments to those who killed Hifazat activists.

The party’s senior leaders Mohibullah Babu Nagari, Hafez Shamsul Alam and Mufti Harun Izahar were present at the press conference.

Junaid Babu Nagari was arrested in the city’s Dhakeshwari National Temple area on Monday night hours after Hifazat chief Ahmad Shafi left Dhaka for Chittagong to avoid arrest after thousands of his followers unleashed deadly violence in downtown Dhaka on Sunday, causing widespread damage.

A Dhaka court on Tuesday remanded Babu Nagari in police custody for nine days in a case filed over the mayhem.
