Committee to probe Subarna fire

The railway authority has formed a four-member committee to probe the torching of Subarna Express at the Chittagong Railway Station.

Headed by its east zone’s Chief Operating Superintendent Mia Jahan, the committee has been asked to submit its finding within three days, east railway’s General Manager Tafazzal Hossain has said.

Unidentified miscreants set fire to five coaches of the Subarna Express at around 4:50am on Tuesday. Fire fighters brought the flames under control after an hour-long frantic effort.

Four people, including the Chittagong Railway Station Master have been suspended after the incident.

Police have detained Azgar Ahmed Ehsan, 23, and Mithu Mia, 25, on suspicion of their link with the torching.

GRP Chittagong Police Station OC Ahsan Habib said process of filing a case in this regard was on.

The Jamaat-e-Islami and its student affiliate, Islami Chhatra Shibir, demanding release of its top leaders facing trials on war crimes charges, have been systematically attacking Bangladesh’s transport sector, particularly the railways, which was hitherto considered as safe mode of transportation.

Rail tracks were uprooted, coaches were gutted and even tracks were torched in various places in the country in the past few days.
