Atiur to stay Governor until 2016

The government on Thursday extended the term of Bangladesh Bank Governor Atiur Rahman by more than three more years.

“Primarily, I will emphasise on two things – effective supervision and monitoring of the financial sector and then take firm action so that incidents like Hallmark scam does not happen again.”
Rahman stressed on ensuring inclusiveness for down-trodden in government's policies.
The government's order reached the Governor's secretariat in the morning, General Manager AAM Asaduzzaman said.
Atiur Rahman’s tenure as Governor was extended until Aug 2, 2016 when he reaches 65 years of age, the order said.
He was slated to retire on Apr 30 this year.
He was appointed Governor on May 2, 2009 after the present government assumed office.
Earlier in his career, Atiur Rahman was Chairman of Janata Bank Limited Bangladesh and board member of Sonali Bank Limited.
Atiur Rahman was born on Nov 28, 1949 in Jamalpur. He completed secondary and higher-secondary certificate education from Mirzapur Cadet College. He obtained Honours and Masters degree in Economics from University of Dhaka.
He obtained Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in 1983.
Atiur Rahman began his career as Planning Officer in Bangladesh Parjatan Corporation in 1975 when studying for the Masters degree. He joined Bangladesh Institute of Development Studies (BIDS) in 1983.
He was also a Professor during his career.
Atiur Rahman wrote more than 20 books on economics, agriculture, poverty alleviation, Liberation War of Bangladesh and literature of Rabindranath Tagore.
