[bdnews24.com Editor-in-Chief Toufique Imrose Khalidi spoke at the launch of hello.bdnews24.com. Excerpts of his speech are below]

Ladies and gentlemen,

As much as this venture exposes us to a lot of potential, it also poses multiple challenges.
The new media, as you all know, is now breeding a new generation of citizen reporters. The traditional media is operated from huge platforms; news is provided by TV, radio and newspaper usually with a high urban-centric editorial viewpoint and is not very interactive. The new media and the onliners are thriving with unpaid citizen journalists with a more grassroots clout. I believe the young journalists that we are trying to train and groom will do much better because of being the DIGITAL NATIVES than us the DIGITAL IMMIGRANTS.

Our challenge at this point is to connect their dots with the professionalism that ensures balance and credibility. More voices, including these young ones, will gradually join the news conversation, and we also need to realise that old orders will be gradually crumbling everywhere. With breaking news on your phones and desktops, laptops or iPads, the platform where we work from – bdnews24.com

is a bridge between online and traditional media.

People now subscribe, for example, to feeds from micro-blogging site Twitter. It helps you get updates on your chosen topic, all for free and in a fraction of a second and from anywhere in the world – from Allahabad to Abbottabad, from Tokyo to Toledo.

We hope to create the right climate for these youngsters to take the plunge into this brave new world.

We need to remember that we all are living in a WikiLeakable Glass House. While we the professional journalists try to take an aim at it, I presume these young journalists will not be far behind.

Smart phones are getting smarter almost every month. Tablets, iPads have their own ways of presenting content. So our Hello will have its mobile version. News filed by these 10- to 17-year-olds will reach you wherever you are.

The changing taste of news consumers will, I am sure, create a new breed of competent professionals that we so profoundly lack in this country.

I will paraphrase Charles Dickens to conclude this:

It is indeed the best of times and the worst of times ... It is indeed the age of Light and the age of Darkness. We have too many choices in terms of media platforms. Some are dangerously slow, yet credible; some are outrageously prompt, yet reckless. Good media can filter questionable content with the fastest speed and then spread it around. If the digital platforms like ours need to wait a few more minutes to provide the accurate information to our readers, so be it. Credibility cannot be downsized, even for the sake of the tempting new, digital media embodying SPEED.

This speed has to be responsible, rational and right.

Thank you.
