Post-verdict clashes in Rajshahi

At least 30 people including policemen were injured in clashes between Jamaat-Shibir supporters and law keepers after jamaat leader Delwar Hossain Sayadee was given a death sentence by a war crimes tribunal on Thursday.

Clashes broke out in Binodpur (adjacent to Rajshahi Unirsity area), Mirzapur, Mondaler Mor areas around 2:45pm, said Motihar Police Station Officer in-Charge Abdus Sobhan.

At least 30 people including three policemen were injured,.” Sobhan said.

Some hundreds of Islami Chhatra Shibir activists tried to bring out a procession in Binodpur’s Dhaka-Rajshahi highway to block the road, he said.

They pelted stones when police intervened. At one point they exploded at least 15 handmade crude bombs in the area.

They dispersed to adjacent areas of Mondaler Mor, Mirzapur areas, but continued hurling bombs and firing at police.

OC said police lobbed teargas shells and fired in the air to bring situation under control.
