The Jamaat-e-Islami and BNP have endorsed the strike call.
Witnesses said several activists of the Shibir, the student affiliate of the Jamaat, smashed a truck in front of the Islami Bank Medical College Hospital in the metropolitan’s Naudapara area at around 10am.
Rajshahi Metropolitan Police Commissioner SM Monir-uz-Zaman said locals intervened when the Shibir activists tried to set the truck on fire.
The strike call by the small parties has failed to generate any response elsewhere in the city.
Most of the shops and business establishments in the city were opened by 11am.
Long distance buses have been grounded, but the local services remained unaffected. Trains were also running as normal.
Those opposing the shutdown brought out a procession in the morning.
