3 cases for Tuesday's Ctg violence

Nineteen activists of the Islami Chhatra Shibir have been accused along with many others who have not been named for the violence on Tuesday in the port city during a Jamaat-e-Islami-sponsored nationwide strike.

Tuesday’s strike coincided with the verdict of life imprisonment handed down by a war crimes tribunal against Jamaat-e-Islami’s Assistant Secretary General Abdul Quader Molla.

Sub-Inspector Mohammad Mamun filed the cases late Wednesday in Panchlaish Police Station under the Arms Act and the Speedy Trials Act for attacks on police, Panchlaish zone Assistant Commissioner of Police Abdur Rauf told bdnews24.com .

Chittagong city experienced violent clashes between pro-strike supporters and police amidst reports of vandalism. Jamaat-Shibir activists went berserk on Tuesday evening on hearing that one of their supporters had died. They reportedly attacked a police station with firearms. Police said three pedestrians died in the clashes.

Meanwhile, Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) have been asked to remain standby in Chittagong during Wednesday’s nationwide dawn-to-dusk shutdown enforced by Jamat-e-Islami.

A decision was taken to deploy three platoons of BGB to tackle any untoward situation, said Chittagong District Administrator Abdul Mannan. But they have not been deployed as yet.

Metropolitan Police Double Mooring zone Assistant Commissioner Hasanuzzaman Molla told bdnews24.com that there were no reports of violence so far into Wednesday’s strike.

Attendance at banks and insurance companies were low. Industries and readymade garment units were open.

Activities at Chittagong Seaport have been hampered because of the shutdown.
