10 hurt in N’ganj

At least 10 people including three policemen were injured in clashes between law enforcers and Jamaat-e-Islami, Islami Chhatra Shibir activists amidst a nationwide daylong shutdown in Narayanganj on Wednesday.

Police arrested six people after clashes till 10:00am. One injured Shibir man was sent to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital with critical injuries.

Jamaat-e-Islami called the shutdown for Wednesday after is Assistant Secretary General Abdul Quader Molla was sentenced to life in prison on Tuesday.

Islami Chhatra Shibir brought out a rowdy procession in city’s Galacihpa Nitaiganj area around 6:45am, said Narayanganj Sadr Model Police Station Officer in-Charge Manjur Kader. “Metropolitan Shibir General Secretary Khorshed led the procession armed with steel rods and batons.”

Clashes took place when police intercepted them in Chasharah area. Jamaat-Shibir men started throwing brickbats at police.

Police charged them with batons, fired teargas and rubber bullets. At least 10 people were injured. Narayanganj Sadr Model Police Station OC and two other policemen were among the injured.

The Oc said, up to 35 rounds of rubber bullets and teargas shells were fired.

Police arrested six men from the scene, three of them were rubber bullets-hit.
