Noakhali, Aug 22 (bdnews24.com) — Prime minister's energy advisor Tawfiq-e-Elahi Chowdhury and state minister for power, energy and mineral resources Enamul Huq have visited the Sundalpur Gas Field where a new reserve of gas has been found recently.
The officials visited the field at Shahzadpur village of Sirajpur union in Noakhali's Companyganj on Monday morning. Petrobangla chairman Hossain Mansur accompanied them.
After around eight months of exploration, Bangladesh Petroleum Exploration and Production Company Limited (Bapex) on Aug 17 found the new reserve and started experimental extraction.
On Dec 21 last year, Bapex started digging a well to explore for oil or gas at the 3.5-acre field.
The state-run exploration agency hopes to produce 10-12 million cubic feet gas everyday (mmcfd) from the Sundalpur field in Noakhali.
Bapex managing director Mortuza Ahmad Faruque had said it would be possible to supply gas to the national grid in Mar-Apr next year.
Bapex in 1995 found gas in Shahbazpur of Bhola, and at Salda of Brahmanbaria in 1996.
On June 23, Bapex successfully lifted gas from the Semutang field in Khagrachharhi district, from where 20-30 mmcfd gas can be produced for nearly 15 years.
With the Sundalpur field, there are 24 gas fields and 80 wells in the country.
