Ex-BNP MP Wadud Bhuiyan jailed for 20 years

A special court in Chittagong Sunday sentenced former BNP lawmaker Wadud Bhuiyan to 20 years in jail for corruption. The verdict also provided for confiscation of Bhuiyan's assets worth Tk 6,36, 29,354. Public prosecutor (PP) AKM Zahirul Haque said this was the first graft case verdict handed down outside Dhaka. The arguments in the case were concluded on July 17. Of the total 84 witnesses, statements of 62 were recorded. Nurul Alam, assistant director of ACC, Dhaka filed the case as a plaintiff against the ex-lawmaker with Khagrachhari sadar police station on March 21, accusing him of amassing wealth illegally. Court sources said Wadud suppressed facts about his real possessions in the wealth statement he had submitted to the ACC. Besides, there were inconsistencies in his stated income sources.

Jahangir Alam, assistant director, ACC, Chittagong pressed charges on June 5 and on June 18, the court framed charges against the former lawmaker.
