National Fruit Exhibition kicks off in city

The two-week National Fruit Exhibition 2006 kicked off at Khamarbari in the capital Friday with displaying various delicious and mouth-watering local and foreign fruits.

Dhaka, June 16 (BDNEWS) – The two-week National Fruit Exhibition 2006 kicked off at Khamarbari in the capital Friday with displaying various delicious and mouth-watering local and foreign fruits.
Agriculture minister MK Anwar inaugurated the exhibition, organised by Department of Agricultural Extension. State Minister for Agriculture Iqbal Hasan Mahmud was present as special guest with secretary of the ministry Kazi Abul Hossain in the chair.
Various fruits of different species are being displayed in 41 stalls of the exhibition. Dudhsar, Bishwanath Chatterji, Mollika, Rani Pasand are among the few new varieties of mango being displayed along with bananas, jackfruits and other fruits.
Speaking on the occasion, the agriculture minister said at present around 2 million tons of fruit is being produced in the country, where the national demand at the moment is around 6 million tons.
He emphasised the need for crop-diversification to increase the yield of all sorts of crops in the country. He also attached importance on modernising post-harvest performance to protect the crop-growers' interest and adequate market supply of crops.
The exhibition will continue till June 30.
