“It has put more responsibilities on my shoulder,” he said in his reaction on Saturday.

The London-based financial information provider, Emerging Markets, gave Rahman the ‘Central Bank Governor of the Year 2015 for Asia’ award in Peru’s capital Lima.

Rahman said Bangladesh protected itself from the global financial crunch by investing in productive sectors and through inclusive financing.

“We continue pursuing this approach,” he added.

The governor dedicated the award to the people of Bangladesh, the entrepreneurs, and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

Hasina’s government first appointed Rahman as the central bank governor in 2009 and extended his tenure by another four years in 2013.

Rahman said the central bank’s new approach was yielding results.

“Our macroeconomy is stable, the inflation is within a tolerable range, the interest rate has come down and the exchange rate for Taka is stable,” he noted.

The award is in recognition of his contribution to the maintenance of macroeconomic stability.

India’s central bank Governor Raghuram Rajan won it last year and Chinese central bank Governor Zhou Xiaochuan had been conferred the award the year before.

The finance ministers of India, Peru, Hungary, UAE and Ethiopia, and central bank governors of Mexico, Russia, Egypt and Rwanda have also been awarded this year by Emerging Markets.

“This award is a great tribute to the work of Governor Rahman and Bangladesh Bank, which will help improve access to finance in the coming years,” a central bank statement quoted Annette Dixon, World Bank vice president for South Asia, as saying.
